Cold and rainy out sailing today in the @wvyc_racing_page Snowflake series. Plenty of wind though with a great down wind run. Our instruments cut out so we didn’t get to see our top speed.

Funny moment was this was the only video I took, and then we got hit by a bunch of pressure and had a mild broach. As I was on the main, I had to quickly tuck my phone under my armpit and give a big ease on the sheet. Always when you take a moment to do something else 🥴 💨⛵️.

Never a dull moment in adventure sports. Even when you’re not out training or performing there’s always gear and equipment maintenance.

Making some minor repairs to the tail and rails of a surf SUP where the dings were just deep enough to warrant some sanding and epoxy repair. As not concerned about a ‘beautiful’ finish, just found some nail polish that was close enough to the color to cover it up.

Beautiful skies and views during the WVYC Snowflake series race on Sunday. Unfortunately with the selected race course and wind shift after lunch, everyone grounded to a halt on the last leg 🐌. The race was called early as it would have turned into a late finish.

Great to be out sailing here in BC and joining in on some of the race series. It’s always interesting stepping on different boats and new locations. Many things are transferable, but then there are a lot of specifics to pick up on.

Getting familiar with the specifics of the tides and currents of an area, how the islands and mountains impact the winds, and then from today having a whale breach in front of your boat 😳⛵️.

Started with sunny skies that quickly transitioned to over cast and windy with an incoming warm front. We got up early enough to make use of the morning before making our way back down to the vehicle.

The outdoor spaces are something special here in Squamish. There are numerous adventure sports and beautiful places. Looking forward to more backcountry skiing!

Diverse paddling locations, weather, and conditions were met for an @acapaddlesports Open Water Coastal Kayaking Instructor Development Workshop over the long weekend with @tortugatrek. The instructor candidates came prepared to learn and continue to build the broad range of skills, knowledge, and behaviours expected of them.

The practice paddlers were integral to the process for genuine feedback and authentic situations. The candidates now have a solid foundation to prepare for the exam next spring.

Skookumchuk is a phenomenal tidal feature that creates a powerful standing wave on the flood. Depending upon the current speed and tidal height change that day, it can turn into a massive mess of white water that would be considered a ‘hole’ by river boaters. It can also be a beautiful green wave. The wave is constantly shifting as the speed of the water alters during the cycle and the depth of water changes.

This past weekend, there was a limited period where the wave was doable in a sea kayak. It was fast and steep with the bow constantly plunging. Once it turned into an almost wave wide hole, it was time to get out and hop into a white water boat. Getting bounced around in a large boat increases the risk of personal injury and even damage to the kayak.

Fortunately there was only one swim that day, and it was great to see several paddlers and myself jump into action to get them out of the water and back into their boat as quickly as we could. There are massive whirlpools, boils, and seams that extend quite far back from the wave. Looking out for each other and responding, even if you don’t know the person is important in advanced areas such as this.

Fall is approaching with rain and cooler temps. Paddling on the shoulder season takes a bit more planning as days get shorter, more technical clothing is required to stay warm, and being mindful of river levels with changing hazards.

The long weekend was spent down with @bodyboatblade to run a paddle trip for a couple looking to explore Deception Pass and the surrounding islands and coastline. We were able to see quite a lot of seals, porpoises, and waterfowl while getting to play around in the current at the pass and the rocky coastline of Fidalgo Island.

Went out to scout the upper Green River run just past Whistler. It’s a nice and consistent class II-III run with easy access for the put-in and take-out. One fun part is launching from Green Lake and then almost immediately paddling off into a nice little class II section.

Made a short trip up to Quadra Island to scout out the Okisollo Channel tidal wave and Surge Narrows area. Such a beautiful location and amazing how much water is constantly moving through these islands.

Appreciative of all of the efforts by @bcmarinetrails and @yourbcparks for the work in providing access and maintaining these areas along with the We Wai Kai nation.

Wrapped up an awesome 21-day sea kayak and surf program with @outwardboundcanada last week. We had all kinds of weather during the course and got to see all kinds of wildlife both on land and while on the sea.

It was amazing to see the growth from the teenagers over the 3 weeks, and by the end of the course, they were essentially managing the trip with all of the excitement and challenges that brings.

Scouting out a short and exciting intermediate run that starts on the Callaghan River and merges with the Cheakamus. There’s opportunity for multiple runs alongside read-and-run sections and shore-based scouting. The take out is quite abrupt and if missed can lead into running the start of a technical canyon.

Working in adventure sports and outdoor education is exciting, humbling, and challenging. There’s always more to learn, skills to improve, and maintaining a baseline fitness. A key area to help this process is developing a community of practice.

Fortunate to join Tequila Sunrise on the last day in Hong Kong for a sailing race to Macau. It was around 30 nautical miles with some light winds and crossing areas with some foul currents. It was a pursuit race with us starting around the middle of the pack and coming out as the lead boat!

Another @acapaddlesports instructor course completed over the past few days. The folks coming brought a breadth of knowledge, experience, and humour.

We were fortunate to locate sheltered paddling venues and adjust the schedule with a passing tropical storm. One of the side benefits is that we got to visit several paddling destinations and use a range of kayaks.

Another day out facilitating scouting and professional development with @asobi.master, @force38japan, and @mibo8866. This day was on the other side of Hokkaido. With similar volcanic rock, the erosional features are quite different. The other side faces the Pacific and this side the Sea of Japan.

Beautiful areas to paddle, coaster, and even snorkel. With the super clear water, it felt like getting vertigo a couple of times staring down so deep.

Excellent @acapaddlesports SUP instructor course last with @asobi.master and @hokkaido_great_adventure. It was a stunningly beautiful location with varied conditions during the course.

This wasn’t a standard instructor course as the candidates were all current instructors of @sij_sup_instructor. It was a professional development opportunity for learning about different teaching methods and approaches.

A huge part of improving paddlesports education involves sharing practices and ideas. It’s great to see another association working on continuous improvement!

In working in adventure sports and outdoor adventure education, there is an enduring challenge of maintaining skills, knowledge, and enjoyment. This also includes maintaining fitness and addressing injuries. That may be part of the reason why many folks only do this for a few years, or it becomes a part-time gig.

When what you do for work is also something that you enjoy doing for fun or competitively, things can get wound up. Unfortunately, there is no true balance in this. Paying attention and reflecting upon the impacts to relationships, life goals, finances, health, etc. are essential to navigating the many options.

These photos were from an evening training session during a recent WFR course. I was physically and mentally tired, but I felt it prudent to still get out for some skill maintenance practice. There are days that you need to be able to push through, more from a mental toughness standpoint, and this helps when I know I’ve got time to recover.

Another @solowildernessmedicine WFR completed with @smcadventure! Congratulations to all of the students for successfully completing the course and exams and for the weather providing some challenges on the field day, but not too much ☔️.

This is an excellent course for individuals who are needing to provide care in outdoor and remote settings for extended time frames before an evacuation or rescue can commence. It combines practical skills, medical knowledge, and decision making to build competence and confidence for providing care in challenging situations.

Another 5 day outdoor education program in the Broken Group Islands. It’s not a huge area, but there is so much to explore from the islands, reefs, tidal pools, etc. The changes in the winds, seas, and tides all add to the mix to make it unique each time.

During the week there was a range of challenging to calm conditions, opportunities for developing outdoor skills, and continued work on leadership and team work. One of the best parts is that fires are allowed on the intertidal zone of the beach. It adds so much to the evening when sitting around a fire discussing how the day went and plans for the next.

This past week was a sea kayak expedition with grade 10 students to the Broken Group islands on the south west coast of Vancouver Island. It was a hard start with strong head winds, waves, and wind driven rain. The weather eased up during the week for some beautiful sunsets, swimming in the cold North Pacific, viewing some amazing wildlife, and visiting cultural heritage sites in the national park.

The students had some powerful learning from dealing with adversity, the importance of supportive teams, and appreciating the beauty of these amazing places. I am also learning a ton as I continue to explore the areas where I now live and work.

The Easter weekend was spent out at Skaha Bluffs with a group of students for a holiday climbing trip. We visited just two of the numerous crags located throughout the provincial park that provided a range of climbing grades and types of climbs.

It’s a stunningly beautiful area with some amazing views! We almost had four seasons on the last day of climbing from warm sun, cloudy and overcast, rain, hail, and then some sun again.

Last week was out on Vancouver Island working with @outwardboundcanada for day programs canoeing and kayaking with two different school groups. This was just one part of their buildup to a multi-day trip.

Cleaning up gear this weekend from a 4-day trip to the Gulf Islands for an outdoor education program with secondary students. The weather shifted quite significantly over the trip from gale force winds, rain, and sun.

There are so many opportunities for learning on these types of programs. The most powerful ones though are lessons that are useful throughout one’s life. Such as being aware of your impacts to others and the places you’re in and making hard decisions to change course or abandon plans when the risks and consequences become too great for the outcome being pursued.

Before the @cwwcollective Rough Water Rodeo, we had a chance to get out on the water for some scouting, personal development, and sharing ideas for the event. @online.seakayaking also joined to get more footage for their upcoming new course on ‘rock gardening’ featuring @laura_zulliger and @kellymariehenry.

It’s not very often that I get to be out with a group of accomplished paddlers and trainers that also included @bodyboatblade and ambachampion. Watching how others read the water and pick lines, along with hearing their thoughts and experiences, gives me inspiration and motivation to continue my own development.

Volunteering a day with @blueridgeoec up at @campmikell for some aquatic ecology and team building with 7th graders from @stephenscountymiddleschool. Beautiful sunny day with a cold morning start. The students caught a wide variety of macro invertebrates in the stream along with a salamander and a newt.

Strange remembering that I would have done something similar when I was in 7th grade there back in 1999-2000 😅.

Another outdoor education winter camping program in the E.C. Manning Provincial Park. One of the memorable moments of the trip was being out on the frozen lake at night and having a few minutes of quiet reflection as stars came in and out of view with the changing cloud cover.

There were some interesting and complex insights from just having a few minutes of quiet reflection in a natural space. Nature itself isn’t a panacea, but it’s important for all people to have exposure to outdoor and natural places.

Before the start of the @aeeapac conference I was out delivering a @solowildernessmedicine WFA at Shek Pik as a pre-conference event. The individuals on the course have varying roles in outdoor education and pursuits. Alongside covering patient assessment, treatment of common injuries/illnesses, etc. there was plenty of discussion around preparation and prevention to provide quality trips and programs for students, clients, etc.

Cool, sunny Saturday in Hong Kong for an @trakkayaks demo. Able to head out towards the edge of Clearwater Bay for some consistent F3-4 winds and slight seas to give some environmental context for the benefits of being able to adjust the rocker and waterline of the kayak.

For urban paddlers, travellers, and those with limited space options, this is a solid performance kayak. Even if you don’t fit those criteria, it’s still a great boat 🌊💨🤙!

Past week was spent helping with an outdoor education winter camp program. There was a night out winter camping, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, downhill ski/ride, and a variety of other activities.

The day skiing on the mountain was the most memorable, where we started with blue skies that transitioned to some moderate snowfall. The changing light with the peaks in the background were stunning!

Over the weekend was the culmination of an @acapaddlesports advanced open water coastal kayaking course in Hong Kong. We focused on surf and rock gardening zones with a blast of the north-northeasterly monsoon winds to send in some swell.

I’ve been working with these paddlers for the past several years, and it’s quite amazing to see the arc of each of their journeys. The big takeaways are that you never stop learning and training, being mindful of how your confidence is in relation to your competence when making decisions, and being there to support each other in both successes and failures.

Excited to have knocked off one of my ‘bucket list’ paddling locations at Skookumchuk. It’s amazing how quickly the wave forms and changes throughout the tidal exchange. There’s a fair amount of planning with looking at the tidal almanac for suitable flood tides and tidal heights. There’s also a significant amount of boils, whirlpools, seams, and confused water behind the beautiful wave.

I’m looking forward to living nearby this amazing paddling location for future personal trips and advanced training courses! Appreciate @mikekgill and @speezy_jones being there for the local knowledge and shredding. Glad to have @bodyboatblade join me for the trip up!

My role as a coach is to assist athletes in their whole-person development by training for and through their sport. By providing safe, enjoyable, and learning experiences the athletes will cultivate attitudes that influence their behaviors leading towards quality actions.
I value respect, integrity, compassion, and excellence. Respect involves recognizing the dignity and rights of every person, all living beings, and the places we live. Integrity is being one’s genuine and authentic self and displaying behaviors and actions that are ethically sound. Compassion is demonstrating empathy for others and seeking ways to raise everyone up. Excellence is constant striving and seeking for quality in performance and actions without yielding.
Coaching involves striving towards outcomes by focusing on attitudes, developing relationships, and learning skills. At the core of coaching is a positive relationship with an athlete. A quality coach demonstrates unconditional positive regard for all athletes. A coach needs to be athlete-centered, and they must seek a balance of who is driving the training. A coach needs to model the attitudes, behaviors, and actions that are expected and demanded of the athletes. All coaches are educators, and they embody and use elements of effective teaching and instruction.
